Media Pitch Writing: 79% of college-going students face some mental challenge.
Pitch to Rebecca Dube, a mom, Editor of Today Parents,
and the Today Parenting Team (Today Parenting, 2023).
Subject: Pitch: 79% of
college-going students face some mental challenge.
The Pitch:
Hello Rebbeca,
I am a concerned parent of a high schooler and volunteer
at a middle school to provide students with the much-needed professional
support of counselors and activities for their well-being.
However, to create more awareness about college-going
students' mental challenges, I am interested in writing about what society and
parents need to know earlier to support them in high school and middle
school—to build them up with more confidence and closer to family and friends
who understand them. This will be of great help to their mental well-being.
Counselors and support staff at colleges can provide much-needed professional
mental care. However, awareness about it will inform parents and their wards
about which colleges have these facilities and request other colleges to
include certain facilities.
U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy (Murthy, 2021) and a
national survey 2022-23 highlight the necessity of more than acknowledging the
existence of mental health. 49% of 76,406 students who participated had
symptoms of anxiety or depression, and 14% seriously considered committing
suicide (Eisenberg et al., 2023). The Infographic below shows students' mental
health challenges (Bryant & Welding, 2023).
Anxiety
seems to be the main challenge due to academic pressures, financial
obligations, worry for their future, and more (Bryant & Welding, 2023). If
they know they need mental help to tackle anxiety, they will only reach out and
be able to learn to manage stress better. Moreover, statistics show that 30% do not know
where to seek help at colleges when needed (Eisenberg et al., 2023). The proposed
article will inform parents of the need to provide holistic well-being early in
life. As a concerned mom with experience providing activities to assist in
mental well-being, it equips me with the right understanding of the topic and
connection with the audience to write the article.
To ensure we
make the mental health support system a deciding factor in choosing colleges,
we should move towards it as a society.
I look
forward to hearing from you
