Walking Under the Dancing Spirits

Have you walked under the dancing spirits? That is how I felt on a cold winter night, staring into the Alaskan skies and looking at the dancing Aurora Borealis.

During our 4 night stay, we missed seeing them for the first two nights in a row. The third night it snowed in, the snowfall was so heavy that the sky was not visible, but I knew that I would experience it. All our hopes were pinned on the last night to see the northern lights. I dreaded flying back 8 hours thinking we didn't see it. If the spirits believed I was worth their time, they would appear in full glory; if not, I probably didn't deserve to witness the spectacular event.

We drove far north on the fourth night, and an open house was our den for the night. It took us some time to reach the right location, to find one of the most fascinating natural phenomena, and then it came to its full glory as though the spirits were blessing us in its full galore. I froze as it was standing hours at -3 F, but this breathtaking view made me so excited that I didn't care if I went home with frostbite. I kept peering and praying, and these beauties appeared 3 hours into midnight. I understand the science behind how they appeared, but somehow, I liked the local belief of ancestor's spirits watching over us. Like the locals would, I whistled to reach out to the spirits.

They first filled the sky with eerie bluish-green light, and then it grew stronger as though they were enjoying pleasing the audience. It displayed all colors far more intense than my color palate, some of which I need help recreating on my canvas. It danced and swayed for some minutes; it mesmerized us beyond words can describe and left us in utter darkness and deep cold.

Long after it was gone to lighten another part of the frozen world, my family had to peel me off the frozen ground to go to the warmth of the house; I was not willing to let go of this spectacle.
I still get goosebumps just rethinking the experience.

If you have witnessed an incredible natural spectacle that left you in awe of what a wonderful world God has created for us, do share with me!
